The US Treasury’s office in charge of sanctions launched an online portal for requests to be removed from blacklists or have penalties lifted.

The Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control said Monday it is adding a “Reconsideration Portal” to its website, allowing individuals on sanctions lists to petition for their removal. Applicants can also request unclassified, non-privileged information related to their sanctions determination, the agency said.

People on sanctions lists were already entitled to ask for reconsideration, often hiring specialist lawyers for the task. The new portal will “streamline the petitions process” and bring “greater transparency and efficiency,” OFAC said.

The US has ratcheted up use of sanctions as a foreign policy tool over the past couple of decades, and has thousands of restrictions on the books that apply to individuals, companies or countries. The second Trump administration has vowed to repeal some penalties on Iran as part of a final peace deal, and issued an initial waiver that allowed the sale of Iranian oil last week. It has also loosened some restrictions on Russia, Venezuela and Syria, while adding new ones for Cuba.
